I Adopted a Cat… Finally!

I expected to write my first official post on something related to the theme of my blog. I had ideas to write about my latest travels, or perhaps about the latest books I’ve read. Although I will eventually write about these things, along with other, more universally applicable (that is to say, less biographical) topics, I wanted to start off my growing collection of posts with one about myself.

Of course, I have already released my introductory article, “Hello, World!” in which I introduce myself and my blog, “Minds for the Soul” (if you haven’t already read it, I encourage you to check it out, and to those of you who are new to my page, welcome!). However, I wanted to give my audience a chance to get to know me a even better.

And, if we’re being completely honest, I also just wanted an excuse to brag about my new cat.

Her name is Melón, which, if it wasn’t already obvious, means “melon” in Spanish. She’s still a kitten, so small that she’s still not even a pound (she is, to be exact, 14 ounces). Her fur is a silky tabby gray, and her eyes are the most beautiful blue I’ve ever seen! She’s a rescue with no tail and a fractured back leg.

I’ve been wanting to adopt a cat for a while now, but since I’m still a full-time student, it’s taken me a while to figure out the logistics. But the way my little Melón came into my life was nothing short of a sign from the Universe Herself that she and I were meant to be.

Yesterday, a family friend of mine had been out driving with her daughter, when all of a sudden they halted to a stop because in the middle of the road was the smallest kitten they’ve ever seen. They immediately came out to check on her, thanking their lucky stars that they had stopped so little as an inch away from hitting the cat, who was seemingly injured. She couldn’t move on her own, so they decided to take her in the car and take her to a shelter. On the way to the shelter, they thought of me, and how I’d been looking to adopt a cat for months now.

This morning I got the call, asking if I wanted to take her in. Even before I heard the story of how they had found her, I said yes, but once they told me about how they almost killed her, then proceeded to rescue her from the middle of a busy street, I knew it was a sign.

Call me crazy, but I’ve always been one to take things as a sign, and the way that this kitten has come into my life is, in my humble opinion, nothing short of a miracle.

I’m traveling this week to New York for a friend’s wedding, so my family friends have agreed to take her in until I get back. They’re also taking care of my dog while I’m gone, as well as their own pets.

After getting the call, I picked her up and took her to the vet to get her vaccines and to get her leg checked out.

Once she got her shots, the vet had given her an X-ray and shown me that her back foot had been fractured, probably because she got hit by a car. The doctor recommended a two-day in-house rehabilitation treatment to heal her leg, since she’s way too small for a surgery. It hurt me to hear all of this, but obviously, I agreed to the treatment. I said goodbye to her in the kennel, and left her to be picked up by my family while I’m gone.

I feel for her, but I wanted to do the best thing for her to recuperate as soon as possible, because God knows how long she’d been on the street. Including vaccines, antibacterial shots, the treatment, and medications, the fee turned out to be a lot more than I expected. Turns out, having a rescue comes with a lot more expenses than I thought. But, since she’s still little, and this treatment will supposedly have her healthy in just two days’ time, I have faith that taking care of her will become a little more affordable as she grows up. Regardless, though, I’ll pay whatever she needs me to. You’d do the same if you saw those eyes!

I’ll keep my blog updated with cat stories and other info. I’ll also write about my upcoming trip to New York, keeping tack of worthwhile places to see and visit when in the area (keep an eye out for all the new travel articles I’ll be publishing soon!).

If you want to come along Melón’s journey as a pet, and my journey as a pet owner, feel free to subscribe to my page and sign up for our newsletter! Otherwise, thank you for reading, and I hope you come back soon!
